Why You Should Not Go To Massachusetts Interior Design Coalition

When you think of interior design, what immediately comes to mind? Most people are quick to say “flowers” and “hardwood floors.” Others might have a different perspective and say something like the Boston Museum of Fine Arts or getting wasted at a party. For some, the word “interior” comes with memories of old, musty furniture that’s too big for their living room. But although flowers and hardwood floors are an integral part of interior design, they’re not always indicative of what designers do every day. Massachusetts interior design coalition is committed to changing this.

When you hear the word “design,” do you think of furniture, floral arrangements, and interior decorating? Chances are that your answer is yes. And although there is a strong bias in our culture for these things to be thought of as “design,” they are not synonymous. Designing involves creating something from nothing: whether it’s a product or service, a building or an experience, people are designing all the time . . . and the term can include much more than just designing interiors! In fact, interior design is only one part of the larger creative design field (also known as “design”). And it’s not even the most important part.

Why You Should Not Go To Massachusetts Interior Design Coalition :

1. It’s small.

Design is much bigger than interior design. And there is no room for small thinking. We have to think big and move beyond any narrow notions that lead us to believe that all design work is just about making a pretty picture. Design can be and should be used to tackle some of the most important challenges we face as a society and as individuals: climate change, education, healthcare, poverty, transportation, you name it!

Of course those things require more than just designing beautiful interiors; they require the creative use of imagination, technology and innovation. Fortunately design has something that those other fields don’t have: humanity—the quality or state of being human. Design is a powerful means to make a positive difference in the world and in people’s lives not just inside a house.

2. It doesn’t teach you to think big.

While it’s true that design is not just about beautiful interiors, it’s also important that students are exposed to all kinds of design ideas and strategies, not just those that directly relate to interior elements. The “why” behind every project an intern designs is just as important as the “what” of their designs. Taught through an interdisciplinary approach, design is a vital tool for problem-solving and human development. Design is not just about making pretty things look nice; it’s also about looking deeper and asking questions, “What do we need to do to make our world better?”

3. It’s too much work.

Most interior designers have at least one friend who’s always complaining about their work load: “I wish I could do more!” And for good reason, with private clients and their budgets to keep track of, plus the stress of a hectic studio schedule, some designers don’t have time to get creative and make a difference in people’s lives. Yet as designers, we are inherently creative people. We question the purpose of things, we push the boundaries of design, and we continually find new ways to make our world a better place. Designers have great ideas and lack only one thing: time.

4. It’s too hard.

Design is not just about creating beautiful things; it’s about using your imagination and using technology to solve problems and making an impact on people’s lives. The way to make a positive difference in the world is through design—and we need you to apply your creativity and help bring these things to life! The best designers are always looking for new ways of thinking, and that’s how you can make a positive difference. Worrying about how much time you have in the day won’t get you there.

5. It’s boring.

The word “design” can also mean something that is subjected to a process of planning and shaping. This can be done by an individual, a group of people, or even by nature. The goal is to create something that is functional and successful. Sometimes this can be done on a small scale, like your cubicle at work, or on a large scale, like the building of an entire city. Design is not just about making something look good—it’s about making things work for people. Whether you’re using your imagination to design a new product or to help solve world problems, you’re doing what you love and making the world a better place.

6. It’s not practical.

Design should be used to solve real-life problems and enhance our lives, but it’s not always practical to think big when you’re simply trying to make rent. Fortunately for designers, there are many ways to make an impact with design without a big budget. There are art and service projects, environmental initiatives, entrepreneurial ventures and so much more.

7. It’s not interactive.

You might think all design is simply making things look good on the outside, but that’s only one way of doing it—and a very limited way at that! What’s the point of creating something beautiful if no one sees it or interacts with it? Designers are constantly thinking about how to create positive experiences for people through interactive designs that inspire people to have fun.
