Want a Career in Sacramento Business Journal? Make This Your Secret Weapon

The Sacramento Business Journal is an award-winning regional business publication. The SBJ champions the people, employers, and projects that are creating a vibrant and prosperous community. If you are looking to get into the local publishing industry, this is your chance!

The SBJ publishes ten editions each week covering breaking news in Greater Sacramento and Silicon Valley. We offer job listings, commentaries on current events impacting our economy, monthly CEO interviews with top leaders in the region’s most successful companies, as well as coverage of trade shows and events throughout Northern California.

We are currently looking for writers to cover the following beats:

– Sacramento downtown and midtown development, including the Capital City Development Corporation, local developers and business owners, government leaders and other organizations. Employment opportunities exist in real estate, architecture, interior design and engineering firms.

– The University of California Davis campus. This beat includes employment opportunities in healthcare at the UC Davis Medical Center, agricultural research at the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences or teaching at the university’s various colleges or programs.

– Sacramento State. Employment opportunities include positions in education at CSU Sacramento as well as on-campus housing administration, public safety as well as construction management jobs with Associated Students Inc.

– What do I need to write?

You need access to smartphones, laptops with the latest version of Adobe Creative Cloud, a caffeine fix and enough drive to get out of bed at 4 a.m. for a long ride downtown.

– Do I need experience?

It helps, but not necessary: We like fresh faces too! Just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to get out there and meet people. You’ll find these beats are great places to practice your communication skills as you network with local companies and the people who run them.

– How much does this job pay?

It’s not a “job” per se, but freelance writing is at market rates. We’ll discuss your rates during our interview process.

– Does this beat come with benefits, like free tickets to Kings games? No, but we do cover all your parking and high-speed internet costs.

– Is there an age requirement?

Absolutely not! We have writers ranging from high school students to local baby boomers covering all our beats. There are no upper limits on age!

Requirements:

You must be able to work independently with quick turnaround on assignments and have a desire to be in the heart of the action by working early morning hours. You will also need to have a laptop and smartphone to take photos and file stories. We cover all transportation, parking, high-speed internet and other expenses.

Last year, the Sacramento Business Journal was selected as California’s Gold Standard for General Excellence in the business news category by the California News Publishers Association for a third straight year. The SBJ was also honored with the organization’s highest honor — Best of Show — for its 2015 Best Places to Work feature series that profiled local companies that were going above and beyond in their efforts to attract top talent.
