Talc-Free Beauty Brands For a Safer Makeup

It’s no secret that most conventional beauty products contain talc. Cosmetics that are marketed as natural and organic tend to use micron-size silica (ground-up sand), which can be irritating to the skin and lungs, in place of talc. But can you get away with using products that contain talc? Read on to find out.

What is talc?

Talc is a mineral found in the Earth’s crust. Talc is mined and processed into white or gray powder. Talc-containing products are usually marketed as “baby” powder, and like most powders, they absorb moisture and sweat. Talc particles are also effective at preventing dust from accumulating in cosmetic packaging, which can cause ingredient separation during shipping, thus extending product shelf life.

What about natural and organic products?

Although manufacturers of natural and organic cosmetics have made great strides in substituting silica for talc, there are still some products that contain talc. Some popular brands that use talc include Bare Minerals (which was sued by the Humane Society of America in 2011 over its use of ingredients such as mineral oil, dimethicone and preservative), Burt’s Bees, Clinique and Smashbox. Non-organic cosmetics (especially those which contain parabens) often contain a variety of additional ingredients that have been linked to health problems.

Will using Talc-Free products work for me?

Yes! Talc-free products generally don’t absorb as much moisture as conventional makeup, which means they won’t transfer sweat or sebum from your skin to the surface of your makeup. Furthermore, non-talc talc contains Dimethicone, a substance that can cause acne and other skin problems. If you want to wear makeup that doesn’t contain talc, read on to learn about some great options.
