It’s so easy to slide into the “slacks” mentality. We make a big deal out of the idea that we should dress for success when in reality, most of us are dressing for comfort half the time, and not even comfort that is meant to impress anyone. We don’t want to do anything too stuffy or hard, and with these things on our sleeves we can feel like we’re doing something smart.
But what you forget is that casual business casual looks tacky as soon as everyone else starts joining in on the trend – especially with all of those mini-skirts or low-cut blouses.
No one wants to feel like they’ve made a misstep in the office, which is why you need to learn how to dress for success as soon as possible. Here are three business casual outfits that will ensure success and make everyone else feel like an amateur.
What you’ll need:
Two button-down shirts, or a white shirt with a striped button-down collar – Dolce & Gabbana has the most flattering striped collar we’ve ever seen
Sports shorts or chino pants from New Balance – These ties can be found on Amazon for less than $20. Dolce & Gabbana also has some similar ones that’re stylish and under $300 each. Find them here.
Two sweaters from J. Crew, one thing and one thick – Try to find a sweater that has a popped collar. You can get this from Amazon for under $100. Try to find the same kind of New Balance sports shorts above, but that aren’t beige or khaki in color.
A dress shirt with a collar (white, light blue or light pink) – Prada makes some classy and on-trend ones with matching ties; you won’t need to break the bank to get these either – they’re just below $250 each. For more info on what clothes to wear when dressing for success, check out this article.
Q. How do I look so great every day?
A. I don’t know – ask my stylist! Seriously, though, we’ve designed these outfits to work for people of all sizes, genders and body types. The important thing is to pick pieces that fit you well, hide your flaws and bring out your best features. Once you can do that without help from a professional stylist, you’re ready for the big leagues!
Q. What’s the point of this article?
A. It’s simple: dressing for success doesn’t have to be a ball-buster, especially if it makes you feel uncomfortable at first. You can be stylish and put together, while still being comfortable and wearing things that won’t hold you back professionally – because after all, we’re looking for people who have a plan for the future, not people who are afraid to strike out on their own.
Q. Is there anything I can do to make sure people think I’m dressed for success?
A. If you agree that you want to give them something to talk about, feel free to just wear your outfit and go with it! If they start to talk up your appearance or ask questions about styling or fashion in general, just start talking about yourself as much as you can – it’ll only make things more awkward if you don’t throw them some attention back.
Q. Do I still need to wear a tie?
A. Obviously, if you don’t want to wear a tie, then don’t bother wearing one – it won’t be the end of the world! However, it’s always nice to have the option to do something a little nicer than your typical “business shirt” or “casual blazer” for special occasions. The ties and blazers are optional in this set, but we’ve found that more men should take advantage of their options before they’re forced into wearing things they don’t want.
Q. Am I allowed to wear this stuff all the time?
A. As long as you keep them neat and in good condition, the answer is a resounding yes! The most important thing to remember is that this article was designed for office situations – think of it as a “dress up your everyday” list. You can always dress like this when you’re hanging with friends, or going to a movie during the week if you want to play it safe.
Q. Why are these all so expensive?
A. We have to spend money on things that will last longer than fashion trends the minute we step out of our houses, so if we want to get something that fits us perfectly, then we have to make sure we’re paying for quality pieces.
And there you have it! These are the three outfits that will help make sure you’re dressed for success, whether it’s in a casual workplace setting, or while getting ready with the girls for a special occasion.
